Service

Each week of our life begins on Sunday with what Lutherans refer to as the "Divine Service."  It is intentionally ambiguous language; in the service God serves us, and we respond by serving God.

About himself our Lord Jesus said, "I am among you as one who serves" (Luke 22:27).  Before God we are primarily receivers: sinful beggars who deserve nothing, children of the heavenly Father who for Christ's sake receive everything, both material and spiritual blessings, even the hope of eternal life.  On Sunday mornings we receive the assurance of God's forgiveness and gracious presence as Christ comes to us in the preached Word, in the water of Baptism and the bread and wine of the Lord's Supper.  Even the faith that receives all of God's goodness and mercy is itself a gift, given and sustained by the Holy Spirit through his means of grace.

We respond by serving the Lord as we serve one another in love.  This begins on Sunday mornings as we sing, pray and confess our faith and give our time, talent and treasure in grateful response to God.

It is also our joy as a congregation to serve our community and world through various activities, classes, worship opportunities, fundraisers and service
projects, including our annual Christmas tree sale, the proceeds of which support local Atlanta charities.

We serve together in partnership with other Christians and service organizations.  Links to their websites are on the right.

Our Christian service extends into the week as we serve our neighbors in our various callings in the home, in our communities, and in our work and play.  In our callings we trust that the God who graciously serves us also condescends to do his serving work through us.
